Asbestos in the Environment and the Dangers of Exposure ? Eco ...

The presence of asbestos in the environment endangers the health of any person who may reside, work or spend time in that area if it is disturbed. Asbestos forms naturally as a mineral that can be found in various geographic areas across the country.

Asbestos Found in the Environment
Dozens of eastern, central and Rocky Mountain states are known to have naturally-occurring asbestos. For example, in the central United States 26 natural asbestos occurrences are described through U.S. Geological Survey reports, while eastern states account for nearly 331 natural occurrences. Of California?s 58 counties, 48 of them also have this form of asbestos.
As the mineral is found in rock-like formation, improper disturbance or natural weathering can cause fibers to be released, leading to dangerous health effects for humans. Common methods of human disruption of naturally-occurring asbestos are through mining or construction activity.

Asbestos is categorized under six different types, including:
Amosite asbestos
Crocidolite asbestos
Tremolite asbestos
Anthophyllite asbestos
Actinolite asbestos
Health Hazards of Asbestos

The dangers associated with asbestos exposure include the development of one or more respiratory diseases and cancers. Lung cancer is the most notable cancer caused by asbestos, with the mineral accounting for the cause of nearly four percent of all lung cancer cases. Mesothelioma and asbestosis are other diseases closely tied to this form of exposure.

These health effects result when asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged within the lining of the lungs or other organs.

Asbestos-related cancers and diseases often take decades from the time of initial exposure for the symptoms to fully manifest and develop.
For example, mesothelioma disease is known to become evident between 30 to 50 years after someone has been exposed to asbestos. This extended latency period contributes too many of the late diagnoses that are associated with asbestos diseases.

Exposure to asbestos is something that should not be taken lightly. It is recommended to anyone who is exposed to asbestos in the environment that they seek medical attention and get screening for respiratory concerns. Regular screenings will detect the possible development of diseases like lung cancer and mesothelioma earlier while also providing your doctor additional mesothelioma treatment options.

South Africa: Banyana Ready to Take On Canada

Pretoria ? Banyana Banyana will be out to prove that they are not in London to make up the numbers when they lock horns with Canada in their second Olympic Group F match in Coventry on Saturday.

Kick-off is 3:45pm South African time. While nerves may have got the better of the South Africans in the first 30 minutes of their opening encounter in their 4-1 defeat to Sweden on Wednesday, skipper Amanda Dlamini's charges must now have settled into the Olympic mode, and need a win to keep alive their hopes of a place in the next round.

"We have seen a bit of Canada in action when we participated at the Cyprus Women's Cup in February this year and have an idea of what to expect.

"The nerves of the first match are now behind us and we hope to do our country proud when we face Canada on Saturday.

"It's a great experience for South Africa to play at this level of women's football, being the first time that our senior women's national team has qualified for the Olympics since our team was formed in 1993," said Dlamini.

The Canadians will be just as anxious to secure points, having gone down 2-1 to Japan in their opening Olympic Group F fixture.

The South Africans have had a solid build up phase to the Olympics since outplaying Zambia, Tunisia and Ethiopia in home and away matches to book their place along with Cameroon - as Africa's representatives at the London Olympics.

They also participated in the Cyprus Women's Cup as part of their preparations for their Olympic Games debut.

Banyana outplayed Zambia 6-2 on aggregate to book their place at the CAF African Women Championship 2012 which kicks off in Equatorial Guinea at the end of October.

Banyana's final group fixture will be against FIFA World Cup champions Japan on Tuesday, 31 July in Cardiff.

Who covers health care for Texas' uninsured? Taxpayers

Texas resident Gerard McMahan can't afford his health care, but also doesn't qualify for Medicaid.

Texas resident Gerard McMahan can't afford his health care, but also doesn't qualify for Medicaid.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Texas Governor Rick Perry says he won't expand Medicaid eligibility under the health reform law because he wants to spare taxpayers billions of dollars.

But many Texas taxpayers are already shouldering the burden of the state's uninsured through higher property taxes and heftier health insurance premiums.

Travis County residents, for instance, are paying for Jeff Kehoe to see the doctor for his high blood pressure and asthma.

Kehoe, a part-time event coordinator who hasn't had insurance since 2006, goes to People's Community Clinic for his primary care. When he can afford it, the Austin resident pays up to $30 for an office visit.

The rest is picked up by taxpayers and donors.

The Travis County Healthcare District pays the clinic $133 for each visit by a patient whose income is below 200% of the poverty line. And the district gets its funding from property owners, who last year forked over $79 for every $100,000 of home value. The rate has been on the rise for the past four years.

Kehoe, 53, would most likely qualify for the expanded Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act, which would broaden the health insurance safety net to adults with household incomes up to 133% of the poverty line.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling essentially left it up to the states to decide whether to implement the Medicaid expansion. At least 10 governors, including Perry, quickly announced that they would not or did not plan to participate. Many cited the cost of covering more uninsured residents.

"I will not be party to socializing healthcare and bankrupting my state in direct contradiction to our Constitution and our founding principles of limited government," Perry said in a statement rejecting the expansion.

Under the Affordable Care Act, the federal government will pay the full cost of the Medicaid expansion for three years. After that, the funding will phase down to 90%.

That will hit Texas, which has the highest share of uninsured in the nation. The expansion in Medicaid is expected to cost about $1.3 billion through fiscal 2017, according to the state Health and Human Services Commission.

While Perry's decision will spare the state the additional cost, the burden of covering the uninsured will still be borne in part by residents. Most of Texas' larger urban areas have public health districts like the one in Travis County that help pay for the uninsured.

The uninsured have their care paid for in other ways too. Even without the expansion, hospitals still receive federal Medicaid money to cover the uninsured who come through their doors.

Also, some doctors' groups provide care at various Texas clinics without charge through programs such as Project Access Dallas.

And insurers may raise their premiums to cover costs incurred by the uninsured.

Nearly a third of working-age Texans, or 4.8 million people, currently lack insurance, according to Stacey Pogue, senior policy analyst for the Center for Public Policy Priorities, which advocates for low-income Texans. Medicaid expansion could provide coverage for up to 2 million of this group.

"We are paying for the cost of care for uninsured folks now," she said. "Expanding Medicaid just shifts the cost from local taxpayers and people with health insurance in part to the state budget and federal government."

Even though some uninsured have found ways to have their basic care covered, some are hoping Perry changes his mind and expands Medicaid coverage to all adults.

Gerard McMahan hasn't had insurance since he had to drop his private coverage plan in 2005 because he couldn't afford the $500 monthly fee. Plagued by congestive heart failure and attached to an oxygen tank, McMahan sees Project Access Dallas doctors who donate their time at a clinic in his hometown of Garland.

But the former painter still relies on his church to help cover his medications -- he takes 25 pills a day. McMahan still has to dodge collection calls from doctors. And he still has to wait six months to see his cardiologist.

"If I had insurance, a lot would change," said McMahan, 53. "I'd get the proper help that I need."?To top of page

How to Install Faux Wainscoting on Walls | Danny Lipford

Danny Lipford with homeowner and wainscoting.

Watch this video to find out how to get the look of wainscoting by mitering stock base cap molding, then applying it to the wall with construction adhesive.

Faux Wainscoting Materials List

Faux wainscoting panels for an average size room costs about $80. Materials required include:

  • Base cap molding
  • Construction adhesive
  • Finishing nails
  • Wood glue
  • Painter?s putty
  • Paint

Installing Faux Wainscoting

Here?s how to go about adding faux wainscoting to the walls in your room:

  1. Measure: Determine the height and length of each section of wall. Subtract 9? from the height and cut the molding to length, so there will be a 4?? gap between the baseboard, chair rail, and walls.
  2. Cut Molding: Make 45? angle miter cuts the each end of the molding and cut the pieces to the length needed.
  3. Layout Mitered Frames: Layout the four mitered pieces for each frame, and glue and nail the corners together as you would a picture frame. Predrill the holes in the molding to prevent splitting.
  4. Paint Molding: Apply primer and two coats of paint to the molding before installing it.
  5. Attach Frames to Wall: Use construction adhesive to attach the frames to the wall, using equal length scraps of wood between the floor and molding to align the frames. Apply nails in the wall studs if needed to hold the molding firmly in place.
  6. Finishing Touches: Set nails below the surface, and fill any holes with spackling. Touch up filled nail holes or imperfections with paint.

A popular look for many homes is to install a chair rail molding painted the same color as the trim, and paint the wall below the chair rail a contrasting color to the wall paint above the molding. If you have this in your home, here?s a way to add even more to the rich look by creating a faux wainscoting panel at a fraction of the cost.

Begin by sectioning off the walls in the room. The sections can be the area between doors and windows. For larger spans, divide them into spaces to match other sections in the room as closely as possible.

Next, add the perimeter measurements of each section as though you were measuring the four sides of a rectangle. Your perimeter should be the line above the baseboard, below the chair rail and the height between the two moldings. Add 10% to the sum total of your measurements and round up to the nearest foot. This is the amount of linear feet of base cap molding you want to pick up at the store.

Measure the height and width of each section and subtract nine from each. This will give you the four sides of the faux panel and provide a 4?? border around the finished base cap molding. Before cutting the base cap, it?s a good idea to prime and paint it ahead of time. This way, once installed, all you have to do is touch up the paint as needed.

With measurements in hand and using a power miter saw, cut four pieces of molding for each section ? two vertical pieces and two horizontal. The vertical pieces for every section should be identical, since the height of your sections should be the same. Cut each one at a 45-degree angle, so when placed together, they form a rectangular box inside each section.

Attach the four pieces of the rectangle together by predrilling a pilot hole in each corner and nailing with a finish nail. It?s also a good idea to keep the joints together by applying a thin layer of quality wood glue to the angles prior to nailing them together.

To keep the molding at the proper height, cut a few scraps so when the molding rectangles sit on top, they are precisely 4?? from the top of the baseboard. Instead of nailing the molding to the wall, use a high quality, heavy-duty construction adhesive. Occasionally, if the wall has a little bow, you may need a nail or two to cinch the molding in place.

Fill any nail holes with painter?s putty and touch up the paint, and your faux wainscoting is complete.

New Egypt government to be announced on Thursday: media

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's new cabinet will be announced on Thursday, state media said on Saturday, ending what was seen as a long wait for a new government following the swearing-in of President Mohamed Mursi three weeks ago.

"I will announce the formation of the cabinet in its final form next Thursday," Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said in statements carried by state news agency MENA and state TV.

He said he had briefed Mursi on his meetings with possible candidates.

The former Irrigation and Water Resources Minister was designated premier last week, despite concerns the little-known technocrat may not have the political or economic experience needed for the job.

The time it took Mursi to name his prime minister underlined how Egypt is struggling to turn new political freedoms into an effective government following the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising a year and half ago.

A Muslim Brotherhood politician and Egypt's first freely elected civilian president, Mursi is seeking to stamp his authority on a state where the military that assumed power from Mubarak still wields enormous influence.

Kandil said Mursi was in contact with the army generals on the choice of a new defense minister, a post currently occupied by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who held the post for 20 years under Mubarak.

What Constitutes a, ?Real Marriage?? | Asian American Press ...

Kim S. Hwang, PsyD

Health Care Dialogue
STAFF COLUMNIST
By Kim S. Hwang, PsyD

July 14, 2012? ??Dear Dr. Hwang: There has been a lot of important controversy about what constitutes a, ?Real Marriage.? I am a happily married Hmong woman through an arranged marriage by my parents. I am educated. I understand American laws regarding marriage. Yet, why is it so difficult for some people to understand that an arranged marriage is also a, ?Real Marriage??

Dear Ms. Marriage: Your question about what constitutes a, ?Real Marriage,? is an inquiry that deserves an inclusive perspective. You are not alone. Increasingly, citizens of the United States are being challenged to look at the broad range of diversity or relationships and marriages that exist. Some people do this enthusiastically and others with differential expectations.

Currently, we watch our political leaders debate marriage as though politicians are relationship experts. We listen to endless arguments about what constitutes a ?Real Marriage.? Meanwhile, we tend to ignore important cultural perspectives like arranged marriages.

You have made an accurate observation of your experience. As humans, we seem to impose harsher judgments on differences much more quickly, overlooking obvious similarities. After consulting with another mental health professional about this topic, she brought to my attention a reminder that Western Society enjoys a sense of pride about individualism versus collectivism.

Therefore, it didn?t seem surprising to her that some Americans misjudge culturally/ethnically pre-arranged marriages because western society places a heavy value on the right to choose instead. She further stated, ?Who is to say that we don?t participate in arranged marriages?? She added, ?Don?t we set up our friends, family members and colleagues on dates?

Aren?t these relationships pre-arranged? What about computer dating?? She implied that computers are also pre-arranging relationships based on the information that people provide, just as parents of adult children provide each other in the careful selection of one?s future partner in marriage.

Having said this, I?m sorry that you continue to deal with ignorance and judgment about the validity of your happy relationship. What matters is that your marriage is, ?Real,? to you and your family. At the same time, I can imagine that having others question your relationship and your happiness in an ongoing way can be insufferable.

Having to defend your relationship in this way can be exhausting. Educating others about inclusion and what constitutes a, ?Real Marriage,? must feel like a full-time job. It?s not your relationship that?s the controversy. The controversy lies in the people?s hearts who are questioning your obviously, ?Real Marriage.?

'The Girl from Ipanema' turns 50

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? "Tall and tan and young and lovely..." You've heard of her. The Girl From Ipanema.

You might have come across the bossa nova classic while on hold on the phone, during a long elevator ride, or in a cafe in Beirut or Bangkok ? but you've heard it. It's been recorded by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Amy Winehouse, and survived bad lounge singers and Muzak incarnations to become, according to Performing Songwriter magazine, the second most recorded song in the world.

The quintessential bossa nova tune, inspired by a young woman who passed the songwriters in a beachside bar on her way to the sea, introduced Rio de Janeiro to the world. Now, it's turning 50, and to its legions of fans, the decades have only heightened its allure, adding a wash of nostalgia to this hymn to passing youth and beauty.

"I love this music, and had been searching for this place," said Venezuelan tourist Xiomara Castillo, who with her husband was taking pictures inside the bar where the song's authors watched their muse saunter by in the song's eponymous neighborhood. "For me, Rio de Janeiro is this song, is bossa nova; the city has this rhythm, this charm, this sensuality."

Indeed, the song carries within its chords and lyrics an image of a city that's light and easy, palm trees and blue sky, a sun-kissed life without care.

Rio is in "the levity of the song, its absolute elegance, the way it doesn't take itself seriously" said Ruy Castro, a writer and journalist who has chronicled the city, its music and its nightlife.

This girl who "swings so cool and sways so gently" first stepped out in public on August 1962, in a cramped Copacabana nightclub.

On stage together, for the first and only time, were the architects of bossa nova: Tom Jobim on piano and Joao Gilberto on guitar, with help from the poet Vinicius de Moraes, who gave "The Girl" her lyrics. Also performing was the vocal group Os Cariocas.

Bossa nova was still young then, somewhat of a novelty even in Rio. The name meant "new trend" or "new way," and that's what it was: a fresh, jazzy take on Brazil's holiest tradition, the samba.

The rhythm was the same. But where samba was cathartic, communal, built on drums and powerful voices, bossa was intimate, contemplative, just a singer and a song. The melody, on guitar or piano, stepped up to the front. Percussion receded, played sometimes with brushes for a softer texture reminiscent of surf washing on the sand.

The 1962 show at the club Au Bon Gourmet established bossa nova, wrote Castro in his book about the genre. It didn't just introduce the Jobim-penned "Girl"; other bossa classics, such as "So danco samba" and "Samba da bencao," also were played publicly for the first time.

The small club ? 20 by 130 feet ? sold out every night as patrons realized something extraordinary was happening on the cramped little stage.

Severino Filho was there when it happened. As an original member of Os Cariocas, he was one of the first to ever hear the song.

"Tom and Vinicius had just composed it; it was still on a scrap of paper. Only later did they write it out on a clean sheet," he said. "At first, people in the audience just listened. But they'd come back, and would start to sing along. After that, bossa nova just exploded."

That was also the year most Americans first heard bossa nova. The 1962 record "Jazz Samba," by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, took the sound of Brazil and filtered it through the sensibility of American musicians, making it palatable to the country's listeners. Although an instrumental jazz album, it remained on the Billboard charts for 70 weeks.

After that, everyone wanted a bit of Brazil. Jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald made bossa-inspired recordings. Performing Songwriter magazine says only The Beatles' "Yesterday" has been recorded more often.

Still, it wasn't until 1964 that "The Girl" came to the U.S., with its English lyrics written by American Norman Gimbel. The words are different from the original Portuguese ones but remain true to their spirit.

It could have been a dud.

Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto's then-wife, sang the English words in the album "Getz/Gilberto." It was her first professional gig. Her voice is young, breathy, but there's a little hesitation; she trips over her English oh-so-lightly.

As it turns out, she was perfect: exotic but accessible, sultry and innocent at once. Like the girl in the song, Astrud's voice suggested a beauty that was enticing but just out of reach: "Each day, when she walks to the sea, she looks straight ahead not at he."

American Tryg Sletteland, for one, fell under the song's spell from the moment he first heard it while in college in the early 60s, he said during a recent walk along Ipanema beach.

In fact, "The Girl from Ipanema" primed him for romance, Sletteland said amid the beach's bustle.

When he met Sonia Madeira de Ley, who'd gone from Rio to Vermont to study English, he felt like he'd found his own "Girl from Ipanema."

"She was the embodiment of the song: long dark hair to the middle of her back, big dark eyes, and this 'morena' skin," he said. "And she was so graceful ... She was exotic and beautiful. I'd never met anyone like that."

Their whirlwind romance ended when she returned to Rio. More than 30 years later, with help from the Internet, the two reconnected. Now they're finally together, and split their time between Rio and California.

"He still calls me his Girl From Ipanema," said Sonia, who now goes by her married name, Sletteland.

The "Getz/Gilberto" album eventually won the 1965 Grammy for best album of the year, and suddenly, everyone was talking about "The Girl."

Except the girl herself. Because there was a girl: Heloisa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto, then 17 years old, known among her friends as Helo.

The teenager's days were spent between home, school and the beach, a path that often took her by the bar where de Moraes and Jobim spent long hours nursing their drinks. Their eyes would follow Helo when she passed, entranced with her glowing skin and long dark hair.

Helo had no idea. When she first heard the hit on the radio, she liked it. She'd whistle it sometimes. But she never suspected she'd inspired the lyrics.

There were rumors from the guys at the bar, but she wouldn't believe them. Finally, in 1965, Moraes offered the definitive proof, writing in a magazine that Helo was the beauty behind the song, "the golden girl, mix of flower and mermaid, full of light and grace, but whose sight is also sad because it carries within it, on the way to the sea, the sense of youth that passes, of beauty that doesn't belong only to us."

In spite of the stir she created, Helo had a traditional upbringing, and the song did little to change that, she said. Between her strict parents and her fiance, then husband, she turned down invitations to do films and shows on TV.

"I was flattered, of course. But it left me wondering, do I really deserve all this?" she said. "It was a weight, trying to please everyone, to show these characteristics that the song called for."

Her fiance, who had been her high-school boyfriend, pushed for a quick wedding, and she spent the next decade as a housewife. Now, at 68, she's far more comfortable with her notoriety, doing two TV shows and planning to launch a book in English about her past.

"Back then, I never thought I'd get old," she said. "But youth passes. We have to live each moment."

A Fabulously-Perfect, Summer Stay-cation for our Family ...

Most of you know that I recently returned from ten days on a mission trip, in New Orleans. ?Prior to making that trip, however, I had the most delightful ?stay-cation? experience, right here in Nebraska! ?My family and I had a great weekend and a fabulous stay at the Lincoln, NE Embassy Suites. ?This wonderful hotel quickly moved to the TOP of our list of favorites and will be the one we think of whenever we are looking for a high-value, affordable family-vacation stay.

(I need to also mention that I was sick with grief that I lost dozens of photos of this trip, when our phone carrier ?lost? them in moving them from my phone to our account. ?Happily, our ten-year-old had her camera along with her, so many shots were recovered from her unique perspective and I?m so grateful to have them.)

marquee

There is no doubt that we were expected, and received VIP treatment at the Lincoln Embassy Suites, however; after only a brief time at the hotel, it was also obvious that everyone staying there was given amenities and attention we have not experienced with any other hotel chain. ?We pulled up to the front of the hotel and were treated to valet parking. ?We walked through the doors into a modern and beautifully decorated lobby and THEN ? we turned to our left, and the entire room opened up into a gorgeous atrium, (nine stories high), filled with trees, plants, streams and waterfalls and sprinkled with dining tables and chairs! ?In the center of the atrium, we could look straight up to the giant sky-light that flooded the entire area with natural light. ?The atrium was surrounded, on three sides, by balconies in front of the picture windows of the guest rooms, rising all the way to the top floor. ?It was really quite beautiful, and yet, we immediately felt welcome and ?at-home?. ?The space was as comfortable and inviting as it was ?beautiful. ? Hotel staff remembered, (and called us by), our names, each time we passed; always checking to make sure ?that we wanted for nothing, throughout our stay.

The beautiful atrium area. At the top of the picture you can see there is a small bar and grill where guests can order and then enjoy their drinks or food in the atrium. Just to the right of that, there is a full, sit-down restaurant with an extensive menu available. Whenever we would step out of our suite and look down, this was our view over the balcony. So pretty!

After we breezed through the simple registration process, at the front desk, we stepped into one of three glass elevators that overlooked the atrium and enjoyed the wonderful view as we were lifted up to the eighth floor and our spacious and comfy two-room suite. ?The suite had a HUGE bathroom, a bedroom with two full-sized beds, a desk, large closet and flat screen tv. ?The living area also had a flat screen tv and all the hook-ups to have?accommodated?our son?s gaming systems, though we didn?t think to bring them. ?Wi-fi was included with our room, as well, and was the perfect companion to the large dining/table desk area that made it easy to get work done or sit down to enjoy a snack with the kids. ?The kitchenette area had a sink and ample counter space with a coffee maker, mini-fridge and microwave, plus a safe for any valuables we needed to leave in the room. ?What a treat to open the fridge and find that it had been stocked for us with milk, chocolate milk and many varieties of soda, as well as a gorgeous tray of snacks that included fresh strawberries and cream cheese dip, apple slices, brownies, cookies and more! ?There was a note on the counter inviting us to enjoy these complimentary refreshments and my crew didn?t take long accepting that invitation. ?Delicious!

A well-laid out "kitchen" area gave us the opportunity to store and enjoy refreshments in our room.

Each suite has a separate living area with a flat screen TV. Ours also had a table/desk, a pullout sofa and an arm chair with an ottoman.

The accommodations were spacious and comfortable. While not dissimilar to many other "suites" we have stayed in, the Embassy Suites rooms were clean, well cared for and included amenities we did NOT have at any other "suites" chain. We loved our stay here!

After getting unpacked and freshening up, my ten-year-old and I decided to walk around and take a little tour, before the family went down for the free Manager?s Reception. ?And since it was one of her most favorite things, our tour HAD to include another ride in the glass elevators! ?We noted that there were not only ice and soda machines on each floor, but that using our key card access, we were able to open large, well-kept laundry facilities, as well. ?We scoped out the location of the pool and hot tub, for later, and discovered a weight and exercise room, plus a nice gift shop. ?There is even a full restaurant, inside the hotel! ?We took some extra time to stroll through the atrium, cross the footbridge over the stream and just enjoy the pretty space and the soothing sounds of the water tumbling over rocks in the falls.

At the Manager?s Reception we enjoyed chips and salsa, pretzels and other finger food snacks along with free beverages ? sodas, and if wanted, mixed drinks for the adults. ? The setting for the reception was the atrium we had toured, earlier, and there was ample room for all the guests as it is dotted with dozens of dining tables and chairs, plus conversation areas and other seating. ?It was a casual and comfortable gathering where guests had the opportunity to relax and visit.

We walked to the Haymarket, a local historic area of the city, full of restaurants, antique shops and art galleries, for dinner. ?It was great that it is so close to the hotel and we didn?t even have a need for the car. ?There is actually quite a lot to do in downtown Lincoln, that is within walking distance of Embassy Suites. ?We could have taken in a movie at the Grand Theatre across the street or checked out the latest concert or play at the Lied Center. ?And it would be impossible to go hungry with the number of available restaurants, serving everything from smokehouse barbecue, to pizza to Indian cuisine. ?The possibilities will?tantalize?your?taste buds?as you walk the Haymarket and smell all the delicious aromas.

walking to dinner

Walking to dinner in the Haymarket. There was so much that was in walking distance of the hotel!

After dinner, we walked back to the hotel and were surprised to find we had the gorgeous pool, sauna and spa area all to ourselves. ?It was such a fun evening and once, again, the staff at the hotel was cordial and attentive, acknowledging us by name and then later on, quickly responding to a request for fresh towels in the pool area. ?We finished off our fun at the pool and headed back upstairs to our suite, where the kids pulled out the hide-a-bed and curled up to enjoy a movie, while David and I were able to watch a movie of our own, in the other room. ?Two TV?s turned out to be a great feature!

pool

We enjoyed getting to swim in the gorgeous pool area during our stay!

The next morning, (You know, the point that is usually a mad scramble to choke down a couple granola bars or a tub of yogurt, pack and be out before check-out time.), we were able to wake up, get ready for our day and then head back downstairs to the beautiful atrium at the center of the hotel. ?Two professional chefs were busy taking personal orders for custom omelets, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes and other delicious fare at absolutely NO EXTRA COST ? totally FREE ? included in the price of the room for our entire family! ?There was also a generously stocked buffet line with cereals, fruit, donuts, muffins, bagels, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy and more ? also free. ?We were so shocked and pleased at the wonder of it all, I forgot to take any pictures of the extraordinarily delicious food! ?I enjoyed a delicious sausage and cheese omelet with green peppers, onions and cheddar cheese. ?The person behind me in line, ordered an egg white omelet with peppers and cheese. ?My daughter ordered a ham and cheese omelet with a side of bacon. ?My husband ordered?.well, you get the idea. ?There must have been eight or ten individual omelet skillets going at all times. ?We placed our orders for our customized breakfast and watched as the pro chefs prepared each one individually and perfectly! ?Yum! ?What an extraordinarily delicious breakfast experience! ?If we had gone to a restaurant to order this meal, we would easily have spent $50 or more for our family to have food that probably would not have approached the quality we received at Embassy Suites. ?Can you believe that was all included in the price of our already very reasonably priced suite? ?Amazing value!

made-to-order breakfast

The made-to-order custom breakfasts were scrumptious and the entire breakfast "spread" was plentiful and had so many options! just to the right of this area, was where the two professional chefs could be found, creating breakfast masterpieces for each guest!

?

After breakfast, we checked out and the valets brought our van right to the front door, where we loaded up to continue the rest of our brief stay-cation. ?We live so close to Lincoln and had taken our older daughters to visit some of the great frugal, family fun spots, but our ten-year-old hadn?t experienced several of those, yet. ?So, we strolled through the Sunken Gardens (completely free), visited the giant sculpture fountain in the zoo park, checked out a few interesting shops at the mall and then took her to tour the State Capitol building. ?It was a fun, educational and budget-friendly family weekend that created some great memories and we?re so grateful to Embassy Suites for making it special!

The sunken gardens were gorgeous and a great way to start the second day of our staycation!

Our state capitol is a marvel of architecture and artistry. The tiled mosaics in the domed rotunda area are extraordinary!

Depression, seasonal changes? | Revista Women's Health

Do you feel depressed with the change of the winter season? Are you experiencing anxiety for sweet foods and carbohydrates? Are your energy levels low? Do you constantly feel hopeless, frustrated and anxious? Have you had thoughts of despair?

Most of us generally feel more optimistic and positive with a jump in our step when the weather is sunny and bright. When the weather is gloomy, cold and sad, our moods fall and we feel depressed. However, in some people these mood swings become a type of depression that accompanies seasonal changes and affects their ability to function normally.

Recurrent episodes of clinical depression that emerge during seasonal changes, particularly in winter and / or during the holidays, referred to as seasonal depression ? or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also commonly known as seasonal mood disorder.

This condition is caused by a biochemical imbalance in the hypothalamus ? the part of the brain that governs the body?s primary functions such as appetite, temperature, sleep, sex drive, mood and activity.

The hypothalamus is stimulated by the natural light entering the eye and reaches the retina. When the days are short and reduced sunlight, the hypothalamus has to adjust their response to various mechanisms of the body, delaying these functions.

A milder form of this type of depression more commonly referred to as winter depression, cabin fever or reaction of hibernation. Other names for this condition include depression, holiday, or holiday penalty.

While winter depression can be uncomfortable, the condition is not unbearable. The classic symptoms of winter depression include fatigue, over-sleeping, desire for carbohydrate, weight gain, low libido, and sometimes even despair, social withdrawal and suicidal thoughts. These symptoms are similar to those of seasonal affective disorder ? but not as severe.

Winter depression usually begins early in the winter and usually disappears for the summer (starting in October or November and falls in March or April). It often affects people who live in northern geographic regions.

Changes in ambient light such as cloudy weather or dim lighting affects people with winter depression and makes their depression worse. The winter season is not the only responsible for depressions of humor ? a less common type of depression called seasonal disorder of the summer and begins in early summer and usually lasts until winter.

Seasonal depression is difficult to diagnose because the presenting symptoms are so similar to other types of depression. Is sometimes diagnosed as physical condition such as hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism, infectious mononucleosis and other viral infections.

There are several treatment options for seasonal depression as a complementary therapy and natural, allowing people to lead full and productive lives.

Common symptoms of winter depression include:

  • Weight gain
  • A change in appetite (desire for carbohydrate and sweets)
  • A heavy feeling in arms or legs
  • Physical complaints such as body aches, constipation, diarrhea
  • Low Energy Levels

Fatigue

  • A tendency to sleep for longer periods
  • Loss of sexual desire
  • Concentrating hard

Irritability and anxiety

  • Despair
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Increased sensitivity to social rejection
  • Social Withdrawal

What causes seasonal depression?

The exact causes of seasonal depression are unknown. Research shows that a lack of bright light during the winter months can cause the development of seasonal depression.

Other research shows that a disrupted body clock (circadian rhythm) causes depression and lethargy. In addition, low serotonin (neurotransmitters that carry messages to the brain) and the levels of melatonin (the hormone that gives us sleep) can be found in people who suffer from seasonal depression.

Diagnosis of seasonal depression

The diagnosis for seasonal depression is based on reported symptoms, along with a history of seasonal episodes. A questionnaire will also determine if the sleep patterns of a person, weight, energy levels, mood and social activity are affected.

Help for seasonal depression

In many cases, the diagnosis is overlooked by people who experience seasonal depression often. However, there are effective ways to treat and control symptoms of seasonal depression and do not need people to suffer year after year.

The symptoms associated with depression can affect daily life and not be ignored. Treatment options include conventional therapy, psychotherapy, complementary therapy, natural therapy or a combination thereof. Conventional drugs for the treatment of seasonal depression include antidepressant medication such as prozac, zoloft, paxil or celexa.

While these may be beneficial in the short term, many long-term effects are unknown. In addition, side effects often include insomnia, decreased sex drive, weight gain, headaches and other symptoms. Counseling and behavioral therapy can be very helpful and provide assistance during the difficult months and changes in lifestyle.

Natural Remedies

There are a number of natural remedies and holistic approaches that are best suited for the body than conventional medicine. Herbal and homeopathic remedies can provide harmony in the body and a better balance to your moods and feelings without the side effects and potential for dependency associated with synthetic drugs.

Some herbal remedies commonly recommended for seasonal depression include St. John?s wort, passionflower and skullcap.

There are also a number of homeopathic remedies that may be of benefit as calc carb and aluminum ? that can help deal with feelings of anxiety, fatigue and low mood.

Aurum is used homeopathically to treat brain cell health and can help treat mental conditions such as depression. The people who benefit from this remedy tends to be very sensitive individuals who need help. Nat Mur and Kali phos may also help treat feelings of despair and melancholy.
