Did Rick Santorum Almost Call President Obama the N-Word?

Did Rick Santorum almost call President Obama the n-word?

Multiple news outlets are featuring a video of the Republican President candidate speaking to a crowd in Wisconsin this week (below), where he said:

“We know the candidate Barack Obama, what he was like – the anti-war government ...” He then starts to say a word starting with “n-” or "ni-".

He continues, “America was a source for division around the world, that what we were doing was wrong.” Did he almost drop the n-word? Listen:

Santorum’s team, of course, insists this is BS: “Give me a break. That’s unbelievable. What does it say about those that are running with this story that that’s where their mind goes. You know, I’m not going to dignify that with [a response].”

The n-word, one hopes, is never in anyone's thoughts, even subconsciously. The debates showed time and again that Rick Santorum, when frustrated, rapidly loses eloquence and becomes tongue-tied, stuttering slightly. Could that be all this is?

On the flip side ... what other ni-word was that supposed to be?

You tell us: Was Santorum about to drop the n-bomb?

How to Make Money From Home ? blogpronews

There are many ways to make money from home. The important thing is for people to find something they enjoy. An individual will likely be spending a lot of hours running a side business or job, especially if they do it full time. One money making idea is to sell products online. Individuals will need to find a wholesale or manufacturer supplier for their products. NAW.org is a wholesale organization that can help. People can search for manufacturers through Thomasnet.com, according to Entrepreneur.

Look for wholesalers or manufacturers that drop ship products. This simply means that the company will ship a company?s products directly to a company, if they desire. This eliminates having to carry large levels of inventory. Most drop shippers allow small business owners to purchase even single products; and they can still enjoy low wholesale prices. The business owner only needs to send a shipping label with the customer?s name when they have an order. The drop shipper will do the rest. However, people should include promotional materials like catalogs or flyers for back-end sales.

The next step is getting a website. Many companies offer free websites, including Yahoo and GoDaddy. However, a person can develop a more state-of-the art site with graphic software. They may also find a web designer that can create the site for less than $200 or $300. Online sellers will need both a domain name and host to run their businesses on the Internet. Domain names are available through GoDaddy.com, Register.com and other sites. Yahoo and GoDaddy are also hosts, which keep sites running 24 hours per day.

Individuals can advertise their online businesses by joining forums, writing blogs or using pay-per-click advertising. Pay-per-click advertising allows people to determine how much they want to pay for each person who clicks on their site. Higher rates usually mean a higher position. Search engine optimization is one of the best ways to gain an online presence. This entails using keywords and metatags on web sites to attain high search engine rankings. People can either learn how to do this through online courses, or hire a professional SEO. The cost is reasonable compared to many conventional types of advertising.

Another way to earn money from home is by getting hired as a customer service representative. Search for customer service telecommuting jobs. A couple companies that hire reps are Alpine Access and Rat Race Rebellion, according to CBN.com. Individuals will just need to have phone and Internet service, and be available during certain hours.

People can also make money running their own delivery service. Create some brochures and business cards, then pass them around to business owners. It is advisable to check the going rate in the area. A business may hire an independent rep to keep its mailing expenses down. There is plenty of room in the industry for more deliverers. People can specialize in certain types of industries, such as the automobile parts industry. Most auto service companies must order parts from supply places. The smaller companies may not have drivers to make these pick ups and deliveries.

A lawn service is another business people can work directly from home. That is, it is a home-based business. Plenty of residences, small businesses and office complexes need lawn service. Individuals should pass out flyers and acquire as many accounts as they can handle each week. Those who want larger businesses can hire people to help them. The necessary equipment includes trash bags, transportation, a lawn mower and trimmers.

Treat Each Other Right ? or Lose Business ? "Get A Clue" About ...

We all know the fall out from intra-team squabbling:? a break in trust, team members taking sides, and a huge ebb in productivity ? to name just a few results.? Alas, wherever human beings are present, arguments are bound to happen; we all have egos.? Fighting is unfortunate, but it?s natural. In the end, it?s up to the individuals, and the team, to navigate those rough waters as skillfully as possible and find a way back onto the same page.

But what about the effect of fighting and misbehavior on those around you: those outside the team??? In a February 2012 Inc. Magazine article titled ?Be Kind to Your Co-workers?Or Else?, J.J. McCorvey discusses the findings from a recent study that reports some alarming results:? ?When customers witness employees being disrespectful to one another?[they] not only get mad, but they often try to punish the company in some way.?

Think about it.? You?re in a restaurant and you see two waitpersons fighting.? Or you overhear a manager chewing out a busboy.?? How do you then feel about that establishment??? Chances are, not very good at all.? No matter the quality of the food or the overall service, you?re probably going to leave the restaurant thinking ?this place has problems;? they don?t respect each other; it?s unpleasant to be around.?? As the author of the Inc. article notes, ?When a skunk is angry, it sprays the thing it?s angry at, but everybody else within a 3-mile radius has to smell it.?

The ramifications are clear:? squabbling and disrespectful behavior is felt by everyone in the vicinity ? not just the people directly involved.? And if customers are doing the overhearing, it can lose you business!

So, if occasional fighting is unavoidable, what do you do?

McCorvey suggests:? ?Business owners may not be able to monitor employee interaction, but they can create cultures in which respect is valued.??? You can write ?hospitality? into your mission statement.? You can hold communication trainings.? And at the very least, you can stress the vital importance of keeping your fights private ? away from the public eye.

Remember:? clients are always scrutinizing your behavior ? not only in relation to them, but also in how you act towards each other!

Researchers working on thermal cloak, Predators trill in disapproval
Slathering yourself with mud to avoid head-hunting aliens is great and all, but it ain't exactly the paragon of good personal hygiene. Fortunately, researchers have concocted a cleaner and less cakey defense against Predators that's more likely to be mom approved. Fresh on the heels of the microwave invisibility project at the University of Texas at Austin, French researchers have found a way to make a cloak that can hide a subject from thermal imaging devices. The concept uses alternating materials with varying rates of diffusion to move heat around and create a thermally invisible region. Conversely, the technique can be used to concentrate heat in one spot so it gets hot rapidly. Although it doesn't quite have the wow factor of Cornell's invisibility project, the thermal research may prove to be more practical because it also can be used to manage heat and improve cooling in components such as computer chips. Of course, the question now is, can it be used to cloak an entire tank?

How a Student Benefits from Open Education Resources

While there are undoubtedly many out there who only see education and knowledge as a commodity which is to be sold to the highest bidder, there are others who maintain that education should be a right rather than a privilege, and knowledge should be freely accessible to all. There are so many nuances for each side of the argument that chances are it will take dozens of years, if not more, to find a solution which is going to be acceptable for both sides. However, there are some out there who have taken an initiative to bring free knowledge to everyone in the form of open education resources.

What Are Open Education Resources
The concept behind open education resources or OERs is simply for educators to share learning materials on as many subjects as possible so learners can access them easily and for free.

As of now, more and more educational institutions around the globe are creating their own open education resources, and reusing those produced by others.

There are many out there who believe that these resources should be looked at as the start of a new era for education, which is fair and accessible. However, there are some who claim that it is a movement which will prove disadvantageous in the long run, maybe not to learners, but to those producing materials. There is a staff cost to producing materials, and OERs need to be released onto the internet or housed on specially designed repositories. There is an on-going cost of sustaining the open education movement.

While not qualified to provide an opinion as an expert, I can share a student's point of view on the matter which should prove quite valuable because after all, open education resources were mainly made for student consumption.

The Benefits of Open Education Resources for Students
Open education resources offer a number of advantages for students and indeed informal learners who may choose to use them.

They provide access to high quality learning materials to assist with their studies. This may be because the student is finding them openly on the internet, or because tutors, teachers and lecturers are themselves recommending resources. Alternatively, a resource might just be used by a casual learner who is curious about a subject and just wants to understand more.

Open educational resources are made available on the internet and provide an accessible learning solution for anyone with an internet connection, whether they are using a computer or mobile device.

Many institutions post open educational resources that form entire courses, for example video recordings of lectures, accompanying lecture notes and quizzes to test subject understanding. This is making access to learning much easier to afford for those on a very limited budget, such as myself. If developed further, the whole concept of open education could lead to a more intelligent and well educated society, which in turn will benefit everyone.

Key mechanism involved in Type 2 diabetes identified

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes have discovered a key protein that regulates insulin resistance -- the diminished ability of cells to respond to the action of insulin and which sets the stage for the development of the most common form of diabetes. This breakthrough points to a new way to potentially treat or forestall type 2 diabetes, a rapidly growing global health problem.

In a paper being published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in the laboratory of Gladstone Investigator Katerina Akassoglou, PhD, describe an unexpected role of the p75 neurotrophin receptor in controlling how the body processes sugar. Called p75NTR, this receptor protein is usually associated with functions in neurons.

"We identified that p75NTR is a unique player in glucose metabolism," said Dr. Akassoglou, who is also an associate professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, with which Gladstone is affiliated. "Therapies targeted at p75NTR may represent a new therapeutic approach for diabetes."

The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin that processes glucose, moving it from the bloodstream into the body's cells where it is used for energy. Insulin resistance is a key feature of Type 2 diabetes, in which glucose builds up in the bloodstream and the body's cells are unable to function properly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 20 million Americans have type 2 diabetes.

"Type 2 diabetes has become a very serious health problem and it is increasing at an alarming rate," said Lennart Mucke, MD, who directs the institute in which the research was conducted. "These findings provide an important new avenue for developing better therapies to combat this deadly disease -- the seventh leading cause of death in the United States."

Complex signaling interactions between several different types of tissue -- including fat, liver, muscle and brain -- regulate glucose metabolism. Because p75NTR is found in fat and muscle tissue and participates in many important functions in the cell, Gladstone scientists hypothesized that p75NTR might also help to regulate glucose metabolism.

To study this, the researchers used mice that lacked the genes for p75NTR. They compared these mice to normal mice and discovered that those lacking p75NTR were more responsive to insulin when fed a normal diet. Second, they used some molecular biology tricks to block the action of the p75NTR protein in fat cells. This also resulted in increased glucose absorption in response to insulin. In contrast, when they caused the fat cells to make more p75NTR, glucose absorption was reduced. Additionally, the researchers found that another important regulatory molecule, Rab5, played a key role in p75NTR's impact on metabolism.

"Importantly, regulation by p75NTR enhanced insulin's effectiveness in normal lean mice on a normal diet," said Bernat Baeza-Raja, PhD, postdoctoral fellow and lead author of the study. "Because these mice already process glucose efficiently, the actions of p75NTR on glucose transport indicate a direct role of this protein in the regulation of glucose metabolism."

"Our studies of p75NTR's unanticipated role in regulating glucose metabolism suggest a new target for drug therapies," said Dr. Akassoglou. "Future work is needed to test whether this finding may translate into a potential treatment."

This study was a collaborative work between scientists at Gladstone, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), the University of Michigan and the University of Houston. Other scientists who participated in this research at Gladstone include Natacha Le Moan, PhD, Christian Schachtrup, PhD, Dimitrios Davalos, PhD, and Eirini Vagena. Jerrold Olefsky, PhD, and Pingping Li, PhD, at UCSD were co-senior and co-first authors, respectively. Funding was provided by a variety of sources, including the National Institutes of Health, the University of California San Francisco Liver Center and Diabetes and Endocrinology Center and the R. A. Welch Foundation.

Carbon dioxide was hidden in the ocean during last Ice Age

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Why did the atmosphere contain so little carbon dioxide (CO2) during the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago? Why did it rise when Earth's climate became warmer? Processes in the ocean are responsible for this, says a new study based on newly developed isotope measurements.

This study has now been published in the scientific journal Science by scientists from the Universities of Bern and Grenoble and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association.

Around 20,000 years ago, the atmospheric CO2 concentration during the last Ice Age was distinctly lower than in the following warm period. Measurements from Antarctic ice cores showed this already two decades ago. An international team of glaciologists thereafter looked even further back in time. The climate researchers found that this close connection between carbon dioxide and temperature has existed over the past 800,000 years: with low CO2 concentrations during the Ice Ages and higher CO2 values during warm periods. Now they tried to answer also the question as to where the carbon dioxide was hidden during the Ice Ages and how it got back into the atmosphere at their ends.

"We have now been able to identify processes in the ocean which are connected to the observed rise in CO2," says Dr. Jochen Schmitt, lead author of the recently published study and researcher at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Bern. According to Schmitt, during the Ice Age more and more carbon dioxide accumulated in the deep ocean, causing the concentration of atmospheric CO2 to drop. Only at the end of the Ice Age this stored CO2 was transported back to the sea surface through changing ocean circulation and thus emitted back into the atmosphere, write the scientists in the scientific journal "Science."

A new method for isotope measurements has now made it possible for the first time "to reliably decode the fingerprint of the CO2 preserved in the ice," explains Schmitt. He and his colleague Prof. Hubertus Fischer initially developed these new isotope measurement methods for ice cores at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and further refined them in many years of research work after moving to Bern. Using the new method the glaciologists extract the air trapped in the ice core completely and the CO2 contained in the air is thoroughly cleaned. The different isotopes of the CO2 are analysed in a mass spectrometer and from this data the origin of the carbon dioxide can be derived.

Researchers suggested back in the eighties that this puzzle could be solved using an isotopic "CO2 fingerprint." However, it had so far not been possible to make a precise analysis of the carbon dioxide trapped in the Antarctic ice due to the technical hurdles. The glaciologists and the climate researchers at the Universities of Bern and Grenoble and of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research have now managed a breakthrough with their study.

Development of future scenarios

"The new data have already enabled us to revise and improve a few theories about the possible reasons for CO2 fluctuations. Measurement data from the past enable us to gain a clearer idea about how the climate must have looked at the end of the Ice Age," says Jochen Schmitt. And now the data must be compared with the results from climate models to verify and further develop the models. "In addition to the scientific curiosity about how our Earth functioned in the past, the main question to be asked is how the Earth will develop under the influence of man," explains Jochen Schmitt. These are important scenarios for the future because the CO2 content in the atmosphere has never been anywhere near as high over the past 800,000 years as today, says the climate researcher.

Syria to top agenda at Arab summit in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Arab leaders will offer plans this week to break the political "stalemate" that has engulfed Syria but they won't demand the resignation of President Bashar Assad, Iraq's top diplomat says.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari says opposition forces to Assad's regime need to agree on a single strategy for ending the yearlong crisis in Syria. The issue will be at the top of the agenda of the three-day Arab League summit that begins Tuesday in Baghdad.

A meeting of the League's 21 invited nations will open the event Tuesday. It will end Thursday with a summit of the nation's rulers and heads of government. There are 22 nations that make up the Arab League, but Syria has not been invited to the annual event, held in Iraq this year for the first time in a generation.

"There is a mounting crisis in Syria," Zebari told reporters in Baghdad on Monday. "There is daily killing, there is daily bloodshed, there is a stalemate in the political solution. What should be done? This is a responsibility on all the attendees at the conference."

He said leaders will likely agree on a "doable" solution to end the violence but "it's up to the Syrian people to determine their own future."

"It's not up to other countries to dictate to the Syrians what kind of leaders they have or don't have," he said. "I don't think there will be a call on Bashar to step aside."

The new plan will be similar to earlier League proposals for Assad to peacefully transfer power to his vice president until new, open elections can be held, Zebari said. The League also has called for an immediate cease-fire from both sides and humanitarian assistance to be allowed into the combat zones.

Syria has denounced the Arab League's criticism of the crackdown, saying those who oppose Assad are doing the bidding of the West.

Zebari also admonished Syrian opposition groups to come together with a unified plan for peace. He said opposition leaders are welcome to come to Baghdad after the summit ends to discuss possible proposals. Iraq will chair the League for one year after the summit closes.

"We are trying to search for solutions on how to help the Syrian people," he said. "With all our respect to the Syrian opposition ... the opposition should unite before anything else. The opposition should join ranks and have one vision."

The mounting crisis in Syria will be a top priority at the summit, during which Iraq's leaders will try to prove that their country has rejoined the Sunni-dominated Arab world after years of war, sanctions and American occupation.

But visiting Arab leaders, long wary of the ties between Iraq's Shiite-led government and Iran, may use Syria as a way to push Baghdad into picking a side in the bitter sectarian politics dividing the Middle East.

Iraqi state TV said ambassadors from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain ? two kingdoms that have long been hostile to Iraq ? arrived in Baghdad on Monday evening. Their appearance at the summit marked a sort of watershed event for Iraq, which until recently did not have normal diplomatic relations with either nation because former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990.

At Monday's news conference, Zebari took pains to maintain that Iraq does not want to meddle in the politics of other nations. He said another sectarian battle that has inflamed the region over the last year ? the Shiite uprising against the Sunni monarchy in Bahrain ? will not even be discussed at the summit. He said Bahrain's government has not put it on the agenda.

Syria has not been invited to the summit, but Zebari said discussing the crisis there was fair game because it "is a more pressing issue daily."

At least eight heads of government have committed to attending the summit, which is costing Iraq an estimated $500 million, he said.

Zebari also said Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir would not be arrested if he attends the summit. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court on genocide charges for alleged atrocities in Darfur.

Security was at an all-time high ahead of the summit opening Tuesday, with most roads across downtown Baghdad blocked off and SWAT teams and plainclothes investigators patrolling the streets.

Al-Qaida has warned that it wants to prove how weak Iraq's security remains, and officials were bracing for widespread attacks during the summit, such as the ones that killed 46 people across the country last week.

The Social Media Toolkit: a practical guide to social media for small ...

itswhattheuserdoesIt seems to me that everyone is trying to figure out the role of social media for their organization, whatever size it is.

As more people become become more clued-up about the potential of what social media tools and channels can enable them them do ? as well as not do ? so the need for better understanding of relevant potential is quite clear.

To me, this view is summed up simply and clearly in this cartoon by Hugh MacLeod from 2007: as the text says, it?s not what the software does, it?s what the user does.

That?s a foundational principle behind The Social Media Toolkit, a free guide to social media seen through the lens of small and medium business, formally launched today by Dell. It?s a product I?m especially pleased with as I?ve been involved in its creation, working on it with Kerry Bridge at Dell for the past few months.

Kerry and I offered a glimpse of the toolkit content in our joint presentation at Social Media Week London in February. Well, now you get to see the whole thing.

smtoolkitbanner

The toolkit comes in two guises:

  1. The Social Media Toolkit website ? content presented in a modular format, with easy-to-find sections linked throughout the site. It enables opportunities for including new and updated content over time, and offers a place on the social web integrated within Dell?s overall web presence that?s linkable and shareable.
  2. The Social Media Toolkit PDF ? a document of 100+ pages that contains all the content of the website at launch, offering you an opportunity to read that content offline or print out pages, if you wish to do that. The PDF is available for open viewing on Slideshare; you can also download a copy for free in exchange for providing Dell with your contact information.

In both instances, what you get includes practical information on topics like these:

  • Social media policies and guidelines
  • Confidentiality and privacy
  • Community guidelines
  • Social media and crisis communications
  • Best practices in other organizations
  • How to develop a social media strategy
  • Choosing your social media channels
  • Measurement and influence
  • Tips from social media experts
  • Practical advice to get started
  • And more

dellsmbchatTo complement the launch of the toolkit, and to address the point I made earlier about the need for better understanding of the relevant potential of social media, Dell is running a number of tweet chats in the coming months centred on the hashtag #DellSMBChat.

The first tweet chat will be on Tuesday March 27, 2012, at 8pm UK / 3pm EDT. I?ll be moderating the discussion.

Detailed information about the tweet chat and how you can take part is in a post on Dell?s SMB blog ? in essence, just follow the hashtag on Twitter ? but here?s the list of topics up for discussion:

  • What is the future of social media for small and medium businesses?
  • What is the primary reason you are using (or considering using) social media for your business?
  • What social media channel do you find of most value to your business?
  • What primary tools do you use to listen to what your customers are saying online about your company and products?
  • Does your company have social media guidelines to enable employees to engage online with customers effectively?

If you?re running or working in a small or medium business, join us next Tuesday for an hour of discussion designed to help you see how to engage and interact more effectively online, learning from the experiences of others who have leveraged social media. If you have an opinion or a question, share it in the conversation.

In the meantime, please make use of The Social Media Toolkit ? a useful resource for small and medium businesses.

POV Celebrates 25 Years on PBS in 2012 with Powerful Slate of New Films That Reveal Humanity's Faith, Courage and Resilience

Remarkable Individuals Challenge Authority and Their Own Limitations to Indict a Dictator, Keep Investigative Journalism Alive, Rebuild After Katrina and Find Strength in Love

Award-winning Documentary Series Moves to Thursday Nights; New Season Premieres June 21, 2012 at 10 p.m. on PBS

NEW YORK, March 22, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Launched in 1988 to showcase new and challenging point-of-view documentaries on PBS, POV (Point of View)has grown to become American television's longest-running series dedicated to contemporary nonfiction programming. POV films have won virtually every major film and broadcasting honor, including Academy Awards?, Emmys? and Peabodys. In its 25 years on public television, POV has featured dramatic and provocative accounts of contemporary life that--like the season opener, My Reincarnation--provide unparalleled access to half-hidden worlds of timely interest. Some, like this season's Granito: How to Nail a Dictator, even alter the course of history.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110624/DC25928LOGO)

POV moves this year from Tuesdays to Thursdays on PBS, and the series begins its 25th season on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 10 p.m. (check local listings) with award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Fox's My Reincarnation, the story of a father's spiritual persistence and a son's spiritual awakening. The regular season runs through Thursday, Oct. 18 and continues with two special presentations in the fall and winter, respectively (dates and times to be announced): Reportero, which conveys the urgent story of journalists risking their lives to expose the truth; and Girl Model, a cautionary tale that follows a complex supply chain of young models that stretches across Siberia, Japan and the United States.

Also this season, El Velador (The Night Watchman), Nostalgia for the Light and The City Dark push the boundaries of the documentary genre to unlock the secrets of the night sky--in the silence that follows the violence of Mexico's drug war; in a Chilean desert, where astronomers explore the universe and women reclaim their dead; and in America's cities, where the glare of technology just might be making darkness a thing of the past. And Oscar?-winning director Jonathan Demme, whose Cousin Bobby premiered on POV in 1993, returns with I'm Carolyn Parker: The Good, the Mad and the Beautiful, a story of personal triumph after Hurricane Katrina.

"After 25 years, POV is entering an especially creative and important time for documentary filmmaking in America," says Simon Kilmurry, executive producer of POV. "POV has been the showcase for the work of such documentary greats as Errol Morris, Jonathan Demme, Albert and David Maysles, Michael Moore, Freida Lee Mock and Frederick Wiseman. Programming this series is as exciting as ever. The ability and drive of independent filmmakers to capture the realities of our time is higher than ever, as is the public's interest in their work--on television, online and across an ever-increasing number of platforms."

"Since POV went on the air on 1988 with Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker's American Tongues, our mission has been to champion the documentary art form by offering filmmakers a venue where they can take creative risks, maintain editorial control and reach a diverse audience," adds Cynthia Lopez, POV co-executive producer. "We are so proud that 25 years later, POV continues to be a destination where viewers in search of critical, in-depth information and personal stories about today's social issues can find content, and where filmmakers can make an impact on the social, political and cultural landscape."

POV 2012 Schedule (All regular programs air Thursdays at 10 p.m.; check local listings. Dates and times for special presentations TBA):

June 21 - My Reincarnation by Jennifer Fox

As Norbu rises as a teacher in the West, Yeshi, recognized from birth as the reincarnation of a famed Buddhist master, breaks away to embrace the modern world. Can the father convince his son to keep the family's spiritual legacy alive? With intimate access to both the family and H.H. the Dalai Lama, Fox distills a decades-long drama into a universal story about love, transformation and destiny. Winner, Top 20 Audience Award, 2010International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Produced in association with American Documentary | POV.

June 28 - Granito: How to Nail a Dictator by Peter Kinoy, Pamela Yates and Paco de Onis

In a stunning milestone for justice in Central America, a Guatemalan court recently charged former dictator Efrain Rios Montt with genocide for his brutal war against the country's Mayan people in the 1980s--and Pamela Yates' 1983 documentary, When the Mountains Tremble, provided key evidence for bringing the indictment. Granito: How to Nail a Dictator tells the extraordinary story of how a film, aiding a new generation of human rights activists, became a granito--a tiny grain of sand--that helped tip the scales of justice. AnOfficial Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. A co-production of ITVS.

July 5 - The City Dark by Ian Cheney

Is darkness becoming extinct? When filmmaker Ian Cheney moves from rural Maine to New York City and discovers streets awash in light and skies devoid of stars, he embarks on a journey to America's brightest and darkest corners, asking astronomers, cancer researchers and ecologists what is lost in the glare of city lights. Blending a humorous, searching narrative with poetic footage of the night sky, The City Dark provides a fascinating introduction to the science of the dark and an exploration of our relationship to the stars.

July 12 - Guilty Pleasures by Julie Moggan

Every four seconds a romance novel published by Harlequin or its British counterpart, Mills & Boon, is sold somewhere in the world. Julie Moggan's Guilty Pleasures takes an amusing and touching look at this global phenomenon. Ironies abound in the contrasts between the everyday lives of the books' readers and the fantasy worlds that offer them escape. Guilty Pleasures portrays five romance devotees who must, ultimately, find their dreams in the real world. AnOfficial Selection of the 2010 IDFA.

July 19 - The Light in Her Eyes by Julia Meltzer and Laura Nix

A surprising cultural shift is underway--women are claiming space within the mosque. Shot right before the uprising in Syria erupted, The Light in Her Eyes offers an extraordinary portrait of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their aspirations. An Official Selection of the 2011 IDFA.

July 26 - Up Heartbreak Hill by Erica Scharf

Thomas and Tamara are track stars at their rural New Mexico high school. Like many teenagers, they are torn between the lure of brighter futures elsewhere and the ties that bind them to home. For these teens, however, home is an impoverished town on the Navajo reservation, and leaving means separating from family, tradition and the land that has been theirs for generations. Erica Scharf's Up Heartbreak Hill is a moving look at a new generation of Americans struggling to be both Native and modern. A co-production of Long Distance Films, Native American Public Telecommunications, ITVS, POV's Diverse Voices Project and New Mexico PBS, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Aug. 2 - Nostalgiaforthe Light by Patricio Guzman

Patricio Guzman's Nostalgia for the Light is a remarkable meditation on memory, history and eternity. Chile's remote Atacama Desert, 10,000 feet above sea level, provides stunningly clear views of the heavens. But it also holds secrets from the past in its arid soil: human remains, from pre-Columbian mummies to the bones of political prisoners "disappeared" during the Pinochet dictatorship. In this otherworldly place, earthly and celestial quests meld: Archaeologists dig for ancient civilizations, women search for their loved ones and astronomers scan the skies for new galaxies. Article by Jessica Vandelay

From one time or another everyone has anxiety but when anxiety interrupts normal day-to-day activities it is unhealthy. Know the signs and who to talk to when anxiety becomes a problem. Healthy anxiety is defined as an uneasiness of the mind caused by fear, anticipation of fear, fear of danger or misfortune. Anxiety can be caused by real danger or fear or perceived danger or fear.
