Understanding hot nuclear matter that permeated the early universe

ScienceDaily (July 19, 2012) ? A review article appearing in the July 20, 2012, issue of the journal Science describes groundbreaking discoveries that have emerged from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, synergies with the heavy-ion program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe, and the compelling questions that will drive this research forward on both sides of the Atlantic. With details that help enlighten our understanding of the hot nuclear matter that permeated the early universe, the article is a prelude to the latest findings scientists from both facilities will present at the next gathering of physicists dedicated to this research -- Quark Matter 2012, August 12-18 in Washington, D.C.

"Nuclear matter in today's universe hides inside atomic nuclei and neutron stars," begin the authors, Barbara Jacak, a physics professor at Stony Brook University and spokesperson for the PHENIX experiment at RHIC, and Berndt Mueller, a theoretical physicist at Duke University. Collisions between heavy ions at machines like RHIC, running since 2000, and more recently, the LHC, make this hidden realm accessible by recreating the extreme conditions of the early universe on a microscopic scale. The temperatures achieved in these collisions -- more than 4 trillion degrees Celsius, the hottest ever created in a laboratory -- briefly liberate the subatomic quarks and gluons that make up protons and neutrons of ordinary atomic nuclei so scientists can study their properties and interactions.

"Quarks and the gluons that hold them together are the building blocks of all the visible matter that exists in the universe today -- from stars, to planets, to people," Jacak said. "Understanding the evolution of our universe thus requires knowledge of the structure and dynamics of these particles in their purest form, a primordial 'soup' known as quark-gluon plasma (QGP)."

RHIC was the first machine to demonstrate the formation of quark-gluon plasma, and determine its unexpected properties. Instead of an ideal gas of weakly interacting quarks and gluons, the QGP discovered at RHIC behaves like a nearly frictionless liquid. This matter's extremely low viscosity (near the lowest theoretically possible), its ability to stop energetic particle jets in their tracks, and its very rapid attainment of such a high equilibrium temperature all suggest that the fluid's constituents are quite strongly interacting, or coupled.

"Understanding strongly coupled or strongly correlated systems is at the intellectual forefront of multiple subfields of physics," the authors write. The findings at RHIC have unanticipated connections to several of these, including conventional plasmas, superconductors, and even some atoms at the opposite extreme of the temperature scale -- a minute fraction of a degree above absolute zero -- which also behave as a nearly perfect fluid with vanishingly low viscosity when confined within an atomic trap.

Another stunning surprise was that mathematical approaches using methods of string theory and theoretical black holes occupying extra dimensions could be used to describe some of these seemingly unrelated strongly coupled systems, including RHIC's nearly perfect liquid. "Physicists were astounded," the authors note. Although the mathematics is clear and well established, the physical reasons for the relationship are still a deep mystery.

When the LHC began its first heavy ion experiments in 2010 -- at nearly 14 times higher energy than RHIC's -- they largely confirmed RHIC's pioneering findings with evidence of a strongly coupled, low-viscosity liquid, albeit at a temperature about 30 percent higher than at RHIC. With a higher energy range, LHC offers a higher rate of rare particles, such as heavy (charm and bottom) quarks, and high- energy jets that can probe particular properties of the QGP system. RHIC can go to lower energies and collide a wide range of ions from protons, to copper, to gold, to uranium -- and produce asymmetric collisions between two different kinds of ions. This flexibility at RHIC allows scientists to produce QGP under a wide variety of initial conditions, and thereby to distinguish intrinsic QGP properties from the influence of the initial conditions.

"The two facilities are truly complementary," said Mueller, whose work on quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory that describes the interactions of quarks and gluons, helps guide experiments and interpret results at both facilities. "Both RHIC and the LHC are essential to advancing our understanding of the subatomic interactions that governed the early universe, and how those gave form to today's matter as they coalesced into more ordinary forms."

An essential part of the experimental and theoretical research path going forward will be a detailed exploration of the nuclear "phase diagram" -- how quark matter evolves over a range of energies, temperatures, and densities. LHC will search the highest range of energies, where the matter produced contains quarks and antiquarks in almost complete balance. But all evidence to date from both colliders suggests that RHIC is in the energy "sweet spot" for exploring the transition from ordinary matter to QGP -- analogous to the way an ordinary substance like water changes phases from ice to liquid water to gas.

"It's extremely gratifying that our experimental program has succeeded so beautifully so far. The connections with other areas of physics are intriguing, and the results are turning out to be even more interesting than we expected," Jacak said.

Google takes aim at Mexico's drug cartels

WESTLAKE VILLAGE-- Google, so far, has won the search engine wars. Now it wants to target international crime, including Mexico's powerful drug cartels.

Eric Schmidt, Google Inc.'s executive chairman, has taken a keen interest in Mexico, where more than 47,500 people have been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against the cartels in 2006. Schmidt recently visited most of Mexico's most violent cities, Ciudad Juarez, where civic leaders asked if he could help.

"Defeated, helpless, these people have been so hardened in their experience with cartels that they have lost battles and they have lost hope," Schmidt told a conference on international crime this week. "They were looking for a universal hammer to protect them. For me the answer was obvious. It was technology."

Experts told the conference that Mexico's cartels often use more sophisticated technology than law enforcement. Cartel assets include mapping software that tracks the location of police from high-tech control rooms; remote control submarines; and military grade rocket launchers.

Drug-dealing organizations can intercept satellite feeds, including images broadcast by intelligence agency drones. They run money laundering networks that handle an estimated $25 billion a year in drug profits.

"It's a technological arms race, and at this moment they're winning," said Marc Goodman, founder of Future Crimes, who studies

the nexus of technology and transnational crime. "But there's never been an operating system that hasn't been hacked."

Google's immense intelligence assets can be brought to bear on the cartels, Schmidt suggested.

Google's ideas include creating a network so citizens can safely report cartel activity without fear of retribution. It wants to make sharing real-time intelligence easier among police in different regions. It can identify how individuals are connected to each other, to bank accounts and even to corrupt government officials. It can create community Web platforms for citizens to share information and name and shame criminals.

Talk also addressed human and arms trafficking, exploitation of child soldiers, and airport and seaport security.

Mexico's undersecretary of information technology, Francisco Niembro, said his country's efforts to battle cartels are slowly going digital.

Niembro said the government has been developing a Web platform where law enforcement can get a national look at crimes and investigations. Today, he said, 8,500 of Mexico's 36,000 federal police are dedicated to gathering intelligence.

"Something like this would be a dream for many countries," he said. But analyzing the massive influx of data takes sophisticated staffing, he added.

Nancy Roberts, a defense analysis professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, Calif., noted that in Mexico, police officials can tap phones, use tracking devices and tap into computer networks. But that does little unless someone can sort through the evidence.

"Our jobs are making sense of all the data so law enforcement knows how, when and where to strike," she said.

Juan Karate, a former U.S. deputy national security adviser, insisted that cyber connections between private financial institutions and central banks are the "Achilles heel" of criminal organizations "because financial trails don't lie."

But Eduardo Guerrero, a Mexico City-based security consultant, wasn't optimistic that technology alone can disrupt narcotraffickers.

"You should never underestimate the power of these guys," Guerrero said. "They're probably even aware of what's going on here, and will figure out a way to use it to their advantage."

Even Google's Schmidt conceded that better use of information isn't enough.

"I think at the end of the day, there really are bad people, and you have to go in and arrest them and kill them," he said.

The conference in Westlake Village, was organized by Google's think tank, Google Ideas, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Participants included Ian Biddle, an arms broker; former Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff; Ron Noble, secretary general of Interpol, the international police agency; Anthoney DeChellis, CEO of Credit Suisse private banking; and Juan Pablo Escobar, son of the slain Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. Juan Pablo Escobar talked about the challenges of quitting a drug cartel.

Iowa Road Trip ? Day 3 ? christatothemax

Our last day in Iowa was met with the BIG EVENT.

It started with Patrick and I waking early, or as early as we could get ourselves out of bed. We showered and dressed quite quickly, and then packed up the hotel. The check out process went smoothly, and there were no surprises. After packing into the car, we were ready for the day! ?We headed over to my dad?s house to hang out with some family and possibly help with some?baby shower?preparation. We ended up having a few tasks to do, mostly to keep us busy while we waited (my sister really didn?t need our help, but she was kind enough to allow us to bother her a bit). I cut up some fondant and veggies while Patrick entertained the kids.?It didn?t take long until we were leaving dad?s and taking my sister to our mom?s house for more preparation. We dropped off some items for mom to keep in the house, it was blazing hot and the cupcakes would melt if they didn?t get some?air conditioning.?After chatting a bit, and my sister completing a couple of tasks, we were on the road again. This time heading for the baby shower location.

We were a little late in the set up, and my mom was running pretty darn late (guests had already arrived and we still weren?t set up as she had quite a few of the items). No worries though, we kept ourselves busy with chatting it up with friends.?I can?t even begin to tell you the order in which everyone arrived, or even how many people were there at any given time ? I was surrounded in friends and family.?When it came time to open gifts (you?ll hear more about this in a different post), Patrick and I were facing a huge group of people who were facing us. I opened each one, handing them to Patrick to check out, while my sister wrote them down. I didn?t realize how?embarrassing?having that many people watch your reactions and expressions, and listening to your thoughts would be. But, in the end I was able to go back to one-on-one/small group sessions with family and friends and I was able to relax once again.

My sister had designed an entirely NES baby shower, knowing that our playroom was based on this theme. It was pretty darn awesome! We had all kinds of food, drinks, and decorations for the Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Rampage, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Donkey Kong NES games. I have yet to see a single picture of the event, but I?m told there were a lot ? and I know there was a ?dress-up? area in which guests dressed up like different characters. I?m quite excited to see those! We got to keep quite a few of the decorations, and they have made our playroom even more NES themed with the piranha plant, mushrooms, potion bottles,?question?mark boxes, and even a palm tree!

We headed out-of-town and towards home?immediately following the baby shower, making a quick stop for gas at Casey?s (where I grabbed a slice of pizza and a few drinks), and then away we were! We stopped at the I-8O truck stop for gas and dinner, and off we went! I fell fast asleep for the majority of the last part of the trip. I can?t remember when we got home, but the next morning I woke up in bed. :)

Puerto Rico woos Hollywood with more tax breaks

(AP) ? Puerto Rico's governor has signed another package of tax breaks aimed at luring more Hollywood film crews to the Caribbean island.

Gov. Luis Fortuno says the additional incentives will make the U.S. island territory among the most attractive locales for film production crews.

The incentives announced Monday will provide film studio tax credits for money spent on non-resident actors, writers, directors and other talent. Previous legislation already created tax credits for hiring Puerto Rican residents.

Many U.S. states have similar programs to entice film crews.

Fortuno says incentives in place since March 2011 have resulted in about 30 productions coming to the island, generating about $80 million in investment. Recent examples include television episodes for Showtime's "The Big C" and the movie "Runner, Runner" with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake.
