Philly officer fatally shot after finishing shift

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Authorities have identified the off-duty Philadelphia police officer who was shot and killed as he walked along a north Philadelphia street, and officials announced rewards totaling $30,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Police say 40-year-old Officer Moses Walker Jr. had just finished his shift early Saturday when he was shot several times about four blocks from the 22nd District station. The 19-year veteran of the force was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Police say the city is offering a $20,000 reward and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 is offering a $10,000 reward.

Lt. Raymond Evers says Walker's service weapon was found under his body, but police don't know whether it was discharged. They are checking to see if anything was taken from his backpack.

Gunman in Texas shootout fired more than 65 rounds

(AP) ? A gunman who was among three people killed in a shootout near Texas A&M University earlier this week fired more than 65 rounds and also took an officer's gun after fatally shooting him, police said Friday.

Police released a timeline of Monday's deadly incident in College Station, which lasted more than 20 minutes. The new details included authorities finding four weapons in the home of gunman Thomas Alton Caffall III ? one of which was a handgun Caffall took from Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann after he fatally shot him. The other weapons were a semi-automatic sniper rifle, an assault rifle and a bolt-action rifle.

Police said Friday that witnesses told investigators that Caffall approached Bachmann after shooting him and removed the gun from his belt. It did not appear that Bachmann's weapon had been fired, police said.

Caffall's family has said he was suffering from an unspecified mental illness and has stated, "It breaks our hearts his illness led to this." Four people also were injured in the incident ? three officers, who have been treated and released, and a Houston resident who is still hospitalized.

Authorities said Bachmann, 41, had gone to Caffall's home near the university's football stadium to deliver a notice for him to appear in court on Aug. 23 because Caffall was at least two months behind paying his rent, owing $1,250.

According to the timeline, the first 911 call came in at 12:11 p.m. The caller said an officer had been shot, as well as his girlfriend.

That woman was later identified as 51-year-old Barbara Holdsworth, a Houston resident shot twice as she pulled her vehicle into a driveway located half a block from Caffall's home. She was in College Station to help her daughter move into a house before the start of the fall semester at Texas A&M, located about 100 miles northwest of Houston.

Other 911 calls quickly followed, indicating that another bystander, 51-year-old Chris Northcliffe, who had been checking a rental home he owned about a block away, had been shot. He later died.

Before officers arrived at the scene at 12:14 p.m., a civilian who was about a block away fired five to six shots at Caffall. Police did not identify this person.

After the officers arrived at the scene, Caffall immediately began shooting at them, retreating into his home between rounds of fire.

At 12:28 p.m., two officers used a patrol vehicle as cover to reach Holdsworth and Northcliffe. Northcliffe had already died.

Holdsworth was later taken to a local hospital, where she remained in intensive care Friday. Friends of Holdsworth posted Friday on a website about her recovery that she is improving, off life support and able to interact with family and hospital staff.

At 12:35 p.m., Caffall had been shot and secured by officers. Caffall later died.

Police are still trying to determine how many rounds officers fired during the shooting.

Funerals for Bachmann and Northcliffe are scheduled for Saturday. Thousands of people were expected to attend Bachmann's funeral service, which will be held at Texas A&M's Reed Arena.

Green Party councillor faces expulsion for opposing gay marriage ...

Cllr Christina Summers, a Green Party councillor in Brighton and Hove is facing expulsion from the Green Party Group on the council. This is because, although she supports civil partnerships she is opposed to gay marriage. The issue was debated by the council on July 19th with a motion on "equal marriage" proposed by a couple of Labour councillors.

Green Party policy is to support gay marriage. However Cllr Summers (a Christian) disagrees. She said:

"When you touch marriage, you're touching family and you're hitting at the very heart of God and I have an enormous problem with that."

The motion was passed anyway. Cllr Jason Kitcat, the council leader, said: "I respect every member's
right to freedom of expression in this chamber and we are all free to disagree." They then went on to debate the less exciting but more relevant subject of Council subsidy for bowling clubs.

That should all be fine. Yet now the Green Party are holding a kangaroo court to deliberate on drumming out Cllr Summers. The "panel of inquiry" is "expected to take several weeks" to decide after "establishing the facts." Several weeks to establish the facts? Click here on the webcam and move the cursor forwards to 4 hours 48 minutes for Cllr Summers' speech.

Whether you agree or disagree with Cllr Summers, is it not extraordinary that the Green Party is even considering such an intolerant response?? Imagine, for example, the Labour Party withdrawing the whip from the Labour MP Ben Bradshaw due to his opposition to gay marriage.

Jon Jones finds himself in a war of words with Chael Sonnen

Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen got into a war of words on Wednesday that showed a glimpse of the future if Sonnen can find his way to another title shot.

It started with Sonnen being Sonnen on "UFC Tonight." When discussing his move up to light heavyweight to face Forrest Griffin, Sonnen says he could easily take the belt away from the champion.

With his bout with Dan Henderson just weeks away, Jones would pay no mind to what Sonnen said, right? Because it's clear this is classic Chael Shtick (trademark pending), and there is no reason for Jones to even respond.

Except:

"The things you say about me hold absolutely no weight," Jones wrote on Twitter. "You disrespected Anderson (Silva) and his country but fought like a child.

"If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be."

Though Jones' tweets have been deleted, Sonnen's responses have not been. He mentioned both Jones' recent DUI and his new deal with Nike.

Jones' response? He is just manipulating Sonnen.

As a fighter, Jones has yet to find his equal. He continues to improve with each fight, and has proven he has a hold on his division. But Jones is nowhere near Sonnen's level when it comes to trash talk. No fighter is.

If Sonnen is so far behind Jones as a mixed martial artist, why give him the satisfaction of turning and looking back? It's odd to see a fighter engage in a trash talk war with another fighter when his own fight is so close.

After the Cheating: 7 Ways to Reconnect with Your Mate | Love & Sex

rebuilding after betrayal

By Mary Wright, Unlocked Love Matchmakers

Relationships can be challenging, but infidelity can create a hardship that causes the relationship to collapse. After discovering that your partner has been cheating, you may begin to question yourself and wonder how you missed the warning signs. Infidelity can create a rift between couples on so many levels, and depending on how it's discovered, that rift can seem almost insurmountable.

However, cheating doesn't have to be the end of your relationship. Many couples have faced infidelity and gone on to thrive in their relationships. Here are a few steps to take after the indiscretion has been discovered and you've decided to stay with your partner.

After the Infidelity: 7 Ways to Reconnect

1. Communicate ? After your partner has been unfaithful, you should ask them why they strayed? It seems like a simple step but it's often skipped. After all, the truth can hurt. But its best to know the reasons so those issues can be addressed. Wait until your partner is ready to open up and reveal this information to you. Unfortunately, in some cases, the answer to this question will never come. Poor communication can make it difficult to repair a damaged relationship.

Related:?7 Signs You Might Need Marriage Counseling

2. Don't Blame ? If you've decided to stay that should also mean you've decided to forgive. Staying in the relationship, without forgiving, is a losing endeavor. Forgiving doesn't mean you have to forget what happened. Discovering the motivation behind the infidelity should help ease the road to forgiveness. Time is a fundamental element in achieving this crucial step.

3. Seek Counseling ? Getting advice from a qualified third party can be helpful and may accelerate the healing process. Counseling can be beneficial if taken alone or as a couple. If you are religious, you might consider getting religious based counseling. Choosing a counselor is a personal decision and selecting the right person is something that should be discussed between you and your partner. If you're unable to seek professional counseling, you might find success by discussing the matter with a mentor or any confidant you feel comfortable sharing the facts with.

4. Spend Time Alone ? Sometimes the best way to reconnect to someone else is to reconnect to yourself first. Revisit an old hobby or start a new one. Reflect on your life and determine if your goals still align with the relationship. If not, you have to decide if you are ready to take steps to move away from the relationship permanently.

5. Plan a Date ? Reconnecting with your partner means spending time with your partner. Plan a date night, for an added touch, try recreating the very first date you and your partner shared. This is a great time to reminisce about memorable moments in your relationship. Take a stroll down memory lane and think about the reasons you decided to enter the relationship in the first place. Remembering good times can help you get through the bad times.

6. Take a Romantic Getaway ? Regaining those wonderful feelings toward your partner may take more than just a date night. If so, this is the perfect time to go on a couple's retreat. Another option is to take a day trip if you can't take a full vacation. Leave in the morning, spend a whirlwind day on a mutually enjoyable activity and return home by nightfall.

7. Renew Your Vows ? You don't have to be married to take vows. However, if you are married, this is an excellent time to renew your vows and show your commitment to the relationship. This act makes a very strong statement to both your partner and the world by showing the level of dedication you have for each other. The support of friends and family can propel you forward in your relationship and smooth the way to forgiveness.

Of course, these steps assume you are fully committed to staying and repairing the relationship. Infidelity is a serious matter and it can definitely lead to a break up but it doesn't have too. Thousands of couples overcome unfaithfulness and go on to have healthy and happy relationships and so can you. Time, patience and forgiveness are key elements to surviving and thriving after the infidelity. For the greatest success, make sure both you and your partner are truly able to bring these elements to the forefront if you are trying to tackle the issue of infidelity in your relationship.

MODIFY YOUR HOME FOR LIFE: THE BATH - Innovation ...

With age comes change, and some of it is unwelcome. When a cherished home turns into a challenging obstacle course, the solution might seem obvious: move to an assisted living or other age-adapted residence. ?But, as we discussed in a previous article, Call Your House a Home for Life, age-in-place design innovations now afford older Americans the option of modifying their homes to suit their changing needs.

THE BATH: PRIME SUSPECT

This essential area is especially tricky, potentially dangerous, and sometimes totally inaccessible to those with impaired movement, weakness, or dependence on wheelchairs or walkers.

The quickest, cheapest way to begin accommodating changing needs is the installation of:

  • reinforced grab bars (by the toilet, in the tub area)
  • raised toilet seat
  • load-bearing shower seat

A slightly higher investment ? but with tremendous payback:

  • accessible shower (low or no threshold).
This adaptive remodel can be designed for beauty as well as practicality and is often done to address future needs while remaining beautiful and usable by all. This specialized project most definitely requires a trained expert: the drainage on a low threshold must be precisely configured for obvious reasons!
  • walk-in tub
A pricier item for adapted living, but priceless for what it provides in comfort, relaxation, and sense of ?normal living.? A true life-enhancer for those with limited mobility. There is an astounding selection of models and price ranges on the market. One that we use and recommend is the American Standard walk-in bath product line.
  • accessible sink
For clients who use a wheelchair, nothing beats an accessible?bathroom sink with legroom underneath. Without such a sink, a wheelchair user must roll sideways up to a cabinet and employ an awkward, potentially painful body twist just to use the faucet.
  • rolling vanity
In this transitional plan, the bathroom maintains more of a conventional appearance. A simple but cleverly crafted rolling vanity cabinet can be designed to fit the individual space. The appearance is of a conventional, aesthetically appealing sink and vanity. When wheelchair users visit, the vanity cabinet rolls out of the way on its lockable casters.

We retrofit for accessibility, and also recommend the cost wise option of basement conversion. As a CAPS-designated contractor (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist), we are specially qualified to help you adapt your home for existing conditions or plan ahead with a thoughtful remodel.

Chuckle of the Week

A contractor needed an extra laborer and two men applied for the same position. They had the same qualifications, so, in order to determine which to hire, he asked the applicants to take a test. Both men missed only one of the questions.

The contractor said to the first applicant, ?Thank you for your interest, but we?ve decided to give the job to the other applicant.?

?But why?? said the rejected applicant. ?We both answered 9 out of the 10 questions correctly.?

?We based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed,? said the contractor. ?Your fellow applicant put down for #5, ?I don?t know the answer.? You put down, ?Neither do I.??
