'Bungee Jump' tells of complex love story @ HanCinema :: The ...

"Bungee Jumping of their Own", a popular 2001 film about a love transcending time, space and gender, is being staged as a musical at Blue Square's Samsung Card Hall in Hannam-dong, Seoul.

Composer Will Aronson, who has worked previously with Musical Heaven, the musical's production company, and lyricist Hue Park told The Korea Times about their work, collaboration and friendship.

Aronson studied classical music at Harvard University and the Universitat der Kunste in Berlin and holds a master's degree from New York University (NYU) Tisch School's musical theater program.

"When I first saw the movie, I thought it has a great story, but I didn't know I would write songs for it", Aronson said.

When the company asked Aronson to write the music for the musical "Bungee Jump", he recommended Park for the lyrics. Park, who studied creative writing in Korea, pursued visual art at NYU. He was a K-pop lyricist in Korea and kept it up as a hobby in the States.

"Will and I have a lot in common, especially a taste for culture - we like John Brion and Bernard Herrmann's music and Miranda July's books and movies. We both are artists and inspired each other", Park said.

Aronson said the movie has a wide range of feelings and it left a big impression on him. "I loved how the movie has so many different feelings and changed as it went on. It started as a sweet romantic comedy, then became very mysterious and got very dark. But ultimately, it was sad, but uplifting", Aronson said.

The 2001 film featured actor Lee Byeong-Heon as In-woo and the late Lee Eun-joo as Tae-hee.

The storyline for the movie and the musical is the same. University student In-woo fell in love with Tae-hee when she asked to borrow his umbrella. The two start dating but Tae-hee dies suddenly in a car accident. Seventeen years later, In-woo, who became a high school Korean teacher, has an extraordinary feeling creeping over him toward one of his students Hyeon-bin. In-woo realizes that Hyeon-bin is the reincarnation of Tae-hee, but he is condemned for being a homosexual by his family, friends and students.

Figuring out how to keep the sentiment and melancholy atmosphere from the original movie was the key to writing the music for the stage version of "Bungee Jump".

In-woo and Tae-hee waltzing to Dmitri Shostakovich's Waltz No. 2 from Jazz Suite on a beach is one of the most picturesque scenes in the movie and many wondered how it would be staged. Instead of using Shostakovich's waltz, Aronson brought his own interpretation and wrote a new waltz for the musical, which opens the show and is reprised throughout including the scene in which the two lovebirds are dancing together.

"The waltz was the first entrance point to make our ways into the love story that is not just simple and beautiful, but complicated and often sad", the composer said. "I know it would be controversial to write our own waltz in the musical, but I love how the waltz functions in the piece - it is a piece that involves memory. Musically, it is very exciting to take a theme and play it with variations or bring it back".

The music gets meaning when it has lyrics - for the waltz in "Bungee Jump", is this love going to end or not? "The lyrics give music meaning and when the music comes back, audiences can relate to the feelings", Aronson added.

Since the coherence between the music and the lyrics is imperative, some composers prefer to write music and lyrics single-handedly. But Aronson favors working with lyricists.

"Everybody has totally personal taste and I always find new ideas and surprises in the process of two people discussing and debating. I love not knowing how the show is going to develop", Aronson said. "In this case, I had to collaborate because I don't speak Korean".

Park added that Aronson has an enormous energy in the collaborating process. "He uses the dynamics between us as power to push through. It was lucky for me to work with him", he said.

For "Bungee Jump", the two talked a lot before actually composing the music and lyrics. Sometimes words came first, while music came first at other times during the process.

"Usually, I have some lyrics to start with and then write melodies and when I had to write music first, it was exciting but kind of scary", Aronson said.

Park said writing lyrics for a musical is like telling a story through music. "I tried to fulfill literary and musical achievements as well as emotions in the lyrics. It should be simple but meaningful", Park said. "In Korean lyrics, rhyming is less important than in English, but I tried to balance the strength of both languages by paying attention to make it sound beautiful".

The musical is based on a Korean movie, produced by a Korean company, helmed by a Scottish director Adrian Osmond, who directed "Sweeney Todd" here in 2007, and scored by an American. In this global production, Park was like a bridge between them as he had a good understanding of both Korean and American culture.

"The show was for Korean audiences and we thought this project was more like an artists' interpretation of the movie in a synergetic way", Park said.

"We were in different places and Skyped for almost a year before actually seeing each other in Korea about two months ago. Collaborating with such mix of visions was interesting", Aronson added.

The musical is like a watercolor and it might not touch the viewers immediately, but its music, lyrics, mise-en-scene and the heart-rending love story will seep into audiences' minds.

"There are many musical spectacles filled with glamorous sets and costumes, but 'Bungee Jump' is a musical of sensibility. I hope calm, stable 'Bungee Jump' will break the fixed idea on musicals and give people something to think about", Park said.

After the interview, Aronson left for Plao Alto, Calif., to stage another show "The Trouble with Doug" at TheatreWorks' New Works Festival and Park returned to New York to continue his experiments as a foreign artist in New York.

But the music and lyrics of the two resonating with the undying love of In-woo and Tae-hee are available through "Bungee Jump", which runs till Sept 2.

The musical stars Kang Pil-suk and Kim Woo-hyung as In-woo; Jeun Mi-do and Choi Yu-ha as Tae-hee; and Yun So-ho and Lee Jae-kyun as Hyeon-bin. For more information, visit www.musicalbungeejump.co.kr or call (02) 744-4337.

Swarm of thousands of bees delay Pittsburgh flight

IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) ? A beekeeper says he had to be called into gather up a swarm of thousands of bees that delayed a Delta Air Lines flight from Pittsburgh International Airport to New York.

Master beekeeper Stephen Repasky tells KDKA-TV (http://cbsloc.al/PqjswF ) he was called out on Wednesday when the bees gathered on the wing of the plan as crews were getting ready to fuel the plane.

Repasky says such swarms form when colonies become too large and the queen leaves half of her bees behind to find a new home. Some swarms can contain 25,000 to 30,000 bees.

Repasky says it's likely there's a wild honeybee colony at the airport somewhere.

The beekeeper was called to remove the insects because they're a protected species that cannot legally be killed.

Take an ecotour | Cheapflights.com

If you want to travel the world but avoid treading on Mother Nature?s toes while you?re at it, then you?ll need to be an ecotourist.

What exactly does that entail? Well, in short ecotourists aim to conserve the environment and preserve the well-being of local people in the places where they travel.

Ecotourism does take a little more planning, but you don?t have to sacrifice luxury, pay a premium or become a backpacker to be an eco-tourist.

According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), ecotourism starts with making informed choices. ?Eco? is a fashionable term these days, so it?s important to delve beyond marketing and establish the eco-credentials of the businesses operating in the places you want to visit.

A number of guidebooks can offer suggestions about a destination?s environmental, social and political issues. Also check into the social and environmental practices of any potential tour operators and hotels and make them aware of your eco-minded intentions.

One thing to ask about is what percentage of the hotel?s employees are locals, and whether the hotel supports projects that benefit the local community.

Finally, see if a business has been awarded an eco-label rating or won an eco-award. Certification from bodies like TIES is one of the strongest indicators of a business? care for its environment and community.

Homes MSP Real Estate Blog: Kitchen design for aging in place ...

Ktichen2Kitchens have become more important than ever as?the trend is towards eating at home more again. This makes universal kitchen design?to suit all stages of life and abilities an important consideration if you are?considering a new or updated kitchen.?

Universal design makes sense not only for your?personal enjoyment, but also for resale value. By 2020 more than 20% of the population will be over 65 years old, and surveys show that the majority of?Baby Boomers?want to stay in their homes and age in place.

I know from buyers I work with that kitchens are important, regardless of stage in life. Consider these universal kitchen design elements...

  • Countertops
    • Varying heights... some the standard 36 inches high, but also some 28-32 inches high for seated or shorter users and for use as a chopping or baking center
    • Rounded corners... minimize injury to both adults and children
    • Matte surfaces... reduce glare
  • Undercabinet lighting strips... more evenly distribute light and reduce glare
  • Storage systems
    • Roll-out shelves... replace shelves in base?and pantry cabinets
    • Lazy susan or swing-out shelves... for easier access?to corner cabinets or smaller items in standard cabinets
    • Dividers... for clear accessibility
    • Pulls and levers... instead of knobs for easier opening cabinets and doors
  • Aisles, doorways and walkways at least 3 1/2 feet... instead of the more standard 3 feet, to make them accessible to walkers and wheelchairs
  • Appliances
    • Side-by-side refrigerators or bottom freezers... provide easier access to both young and old users
    • Separate cooktop and oven... accommodate height differences
    • Controls at front... allow easy access
    • Touch?pad controls rather than knobs... easier to see and use
    • Induction cooktops... heat is only generated when a pan is placed on the surface for increased safety for young and old alike... and don't heat up the room for increased energy efficiency
    • Microwave oven... within reach and sight of those who will use it, which may be?lower rather than high?over the range (think children climbing on the stove to get to the microwave!)
    • Drawer models... consider drawer model dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers
  • Sink
    • Single faucet lever mounted on the side of the sink for easier access without?lowering counter height
    • Consider basin (or one side of basin) 6 1/2 inches deep or less for easier access for short or seated users

Whether you are a Baby Boomer looking for a home where you can age in place, a family with young children, have friends or family with disabilities, or?just want a comfortable home that will accommodate you throughout your life, universal design is something worth serious consideration.

The Heart of Simplicity {Thrive @ Home} ? Rediscovering Domesticity

(click through to view this video)

A bloggy friend of mine asked me a little while ago if I would read and review an ebook for which she was a contributor. The Heart of Simplicity. It?s not just a how-to book. It goes to the core. Challenges your heart behind the day to day issues and struggles. Most of all ? it?s not just about today. It?s about eternity.

From Chapter 3? Motherhood: Delighting in our Children

Do we live out God?s goodness and grace by letting them see that, in
times of weakness or sorrow, we turn to the Lord for our help? Do they
know that God?s Word is of utmost importance to us? Are we spending
time in the Word, memorizing Scripture, and praying throughout our
day?

Many of yo know how I tend to struggle with being an angry mommy. Yeah ? I needed this chapter.

AND

I also struggle with managing my time. Things go great for awhile then the just ? well ? go ka-put. Some days I feel like a gerbil on a wheel ? trying so very hard but getting nothing done. Do you ever feel that way?

From Chapter 10? Time Management: Managing our Hearts to Use Time Wisely

But there is not just a ?one-size-fits-all? method for time management.
God has called us each to do a wide variety of tasks for Him. It is
important for each of us, as individuals, to explore the possibilities of
what it might look like to use our time effectively to further God?s
kingdom purposes ? today. Because, truly, isn?t that the true heart of
time management?

Ah ? the heart of time management. Deciphering the good which God has for us to do each day.? Again ? practicality pointing towards eternity.

I can?t wait to steal away for a few hours to really dive in to a few other chapters (this isn?t a book to just skim over ? there?s too much good stuff inside).? My heart needs this. My family needs this. My home needs this.

  • Health: Bringing God Glory by Caring for our Bodies
  • Marriage: Nurturing a Love that Lasts a Lifetime

Common Skin Cancer a Chronic Condition, Study Says

THURSDAY, Aug. 2 (HealthDay News) -- Here's yet another reason to go easy on the tanning this summer: A new study affirms that basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, should be viewed as a chronic disease.

That's because once most people have a single occurrence, they are at risk of getting another.

"Basal cell carcinoma has generally been viewed as something that comes up, is treated and cured," said Dr. Martin Weinstock, a study co-author and professor of dermatology at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, R.I. "For someone with an isolated lesion, that's a reasonable way of looking at it. But most people are constantly at risk of this and will be getting more."

The study confirmed what was commonly understood about the disease: a prior history of basal cell carcinoma is the greatest risk for another lesion. But the research found that eczema may also predict a recurrence among those at high risk for the disease. Those with a family history of eczema had a 1.54 times greater risk than those without.

Older age, sun sensitivity, intense sun exposure before age 30, and use of certain blood pressure-lowering medications (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers) were also associated with increased risk.

Why would eczema, a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes, be associated with basal cell carcinoma? Weinstock said it's unclear. "There may be some differences in these people's immune systems compared to people without eczema," he said, noting that other investigators need to confirm the findings.

Having other types of skin cancer or actinic keratoses (scaly or crusty growths caused by sun damage) did not appear to raise the chances for basal cell carcinoma.

The study was published online July 19 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It involved more than 1,100 people, nearly all men, all veterans, with a median age of 72.

On average, each participant had more than three instances of basal cell cancer or squamous cell cancer (another type of skin cancer) before participating in the research. During the study period, 44 percent developed new basal cell cancers, and those with the most basal cell cancers in the five years before the study had the most recurrences.

Study participants with more than five prior basal cell cancers were nearly four times as likely to develop a new one as those with one or no prior skin cancers. And their risk was twice as high as those with three previous skin cancers, the study found.

Now the most common cancer in the United States, basal cell carcinoma begins in the outer layer of the skin, often as a small white or flesh-colored bump that grows slowly and sometimes bleeds. While these cancers rarely spread, they must be removed or treated, usually in a physician's office with local anesthetic.

Weinstock said researchers are eager to find a preventive medication to guard against the recurrence of basal cell carcinoma. Last year a team he led concluded that topical tretinoin did not prevent new basal cell cancers in high-risk patients. Now he is involved in a study looking at whether 5-Fluorouracil, a compound used to treat actinic keratoses, may prevent basal cell cancer when given intravenously.

Dr. Jean Tang, an assistant professor in the department of dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine who is familiar with the study, said the most important thing for patients to know is that if you have had a basal cell carcinoma, you have a 44 percent chance of getting another.

"This study doesn't change any clinical guidelines or recommendations," she added. Current advice still stands: "Get an annual skin assessment by your dermatologist," she said.
